A conversation with author John Vaillant on the story behind Fire Weather, the explosive wildfire that consumed a city, and what it reveals about the future
Thank you Doug Lewin for interviewing this author - it’s one of the most riveting books I’ve ever read. I can hardly believe that we are so foolish as to destroy our future and this planet - for what? A couple more years of fossil fueled profit. Doug: have you ever seen the number that if you look at the BTUs in: BTUs out with tar sands, it takes more BTUs to create the crude than the crude delivers! Crazy. When I taught climate and energy courses at AppState (which I left once I realized that the university owns the utility and is 85% fracked gas and less than 0.1% solar, I couldn’t stay (also the pay is so low that your choices are eat and pay bills OR live in a home). The university totally greenwashes, and I have yet to meet a student who doesn’t get that. The poor kids, we are lying to them and cheating them of a future. Onward.

Thanks, Nancy. Yes, on a BTU basis tar sands are a horrible trade. Vaillant covers that exceptionally well in the book.
