It’s a Transition and an Expansion
“It’s a transition and an expansion.”
You’ve heard me say that a lot in the past, usually referring to Texas’s ERCOT grid.
Now, it’s true for the Texas Energy & Power Newsletter and the Energy Capital Podcast.
Three years ago, I wrote a piece on Winter Storm Elliott on Substack. It was less than two years after Winter Storm Uri and the memories were still raw. People were hurting, worried, and hungry for truth. My goal, very simply, was to fill that informational void.
That piece struck a chord, and the Texas Energy & Power Newsletter was born. For three years, we’ve provided a signal through the noise surrounding energy in Texas. Many of you even pledged crucial financial support, which enabled the launch of the Energy Capital Podcast, which has become an important platform for so many brilliant energy experts and helped a broader audience navigate energy complexities in ERCOT and beyond.
Doing this work and growing these platforms have been among the highest privileges of my career. But things are about to change. I’m starting a new job (more on that in coming days), which obviously will trigger some changes at both the Texas Energy & Power Newsletter and the Energy Capital Podcast.
But again, this isn’t just a transition. It’s an expansion.
At the newsletter, a stellar group of writers will deliver the energy information that Texans continue to crave. Stay tuned for more on that soon. And at the podcast, a talented group of new hosts, along with Nathan Peavey, the talented producer responsible for the podcast’s high quality over the last year, will keep this thing rolling and growing. (Look for one later today!)
As with the electric grid itself, a network of diverse resources is more resilient than a singular, centralized one. We’re building the former. This is an opportunity for more voices to use this platform and grow it.
This publication was never about me. It was always about the critical need for independent energy coverage in the biggest energy state in the country. This new crew will continue to deliver it. In fact, I’m excited to become a paid subscriber myself. Because I need this reporting as much as you do: there’s still not enough focused energy coverage in Texas, and this platform is more critical than ever.
So please look at this expansion as an opportunity. Stay a subscriber. Help fund the next generation of energy reporting. And if you have ideas for topics we haven’t covered, or if you want to be part of it, the team is listening at texasenergyandpower@gmail.com.
Thank you for the partnership. With your continued support, this platform will not only continue, it will thrive.

I’m grateful for your reporting and analysis, Doug. Looking forward to the next chapter!
